The Case for Change: Why Spartanburg County Must REPLACE the Sheriff’s Office
The Case for Change: Why Spartanburg County Must REPLACE the Sheriff’s Office
The citizens of Spartanburg County are paying for a service they aren't receiving. We are told that law enforcement is here to protect and serve, yet the reality on our streets suggests a weak on crime philosophy that prioritizes bureaucracy over the safety of tax-paying residents.
It is time to stop the bleeding. I am calling to Shut Down, Defund, Dismantle, and REPLACE the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office with private, taxpayer-accountable security options that actually deliver results.
A Culture of Ineffectiveness
The cracks in the foundation of this office are impossible to ignore. This institution has been deeply troubled for years, plagued by a culture that seems more interested in maintaining its own existence than in aggressive crime prevention.
The current approach is reactive and soft. By the time a deputy arrives to take a report, the damage to your property or your sense of safety is already done. When a law enforcement agency becomes weak on crime, it doesn't just fail to catch criminals; it actively invites them into our neighborhoods.
The Problem of the "Old Guard"
A leadership change is meaningless if the rank-and-file remain tethered to the failures of the past. The employees retained from the prior administration must be scrutinized. I am calling for a full-scale reevaluation to determine if their continued employment is truly in the best interest of our community.
If an individual was trained or supervised under a failing system, we cannot simply assume they have the mindset required to fix it. We need a clean slate, not a workforce still rooted in the same ineffective practices while crime rates persist.
Power to the Taxpayer: The Right to Divert Funds
The most effective way to ensure safety is to introduce accountability. Currently, the Sheriff’s Office has a monopoly on your tax dollars, regardless of how poorly they perform. This must end.
I am calling for a vote that allows community members to divert their tax dollars. If you are unsatisfied with the protection provided by the county, you should have the legal right to move those funds to private security options of your choosing.
The benefits of a private, competitive model include:
- Direct Accountability: Private firms operate on contracts. If they don't lower crime, they don't get paid.
- Neighborhood Autonomy: Neighborhoods could pool their diverted taxes to hire security that understands their specific needs and local concerns.
- Efficiency: No more funding bloated administrative departments or outdated government programs that don't put more boots on the ground.
Protecting the Backbone of Spartanburg: Small Businesses and Property Owners
Businesses of all types are often taxed at significantly higher rates, contributing a massive portion of the tax base that funds the Sheriff’s Office. Despite this higher level of investment, many small, family-run businesses and independent rental property owners find themselves receiving a total disservice.
Small business owners and independent landlords bear a heavy financial burden, yet they are often left to fend for themselves when their investments are targeted by criminal activity. I am calling for these taxpayers to have the power to reclaim their tax dollars. Instead of paying a high premium for an ineffective government agency, small business owners and rental property owners should be able to pool their diverted taxes to hire specialized, professional security. This ensures that the individuals and families who contribute the most to our local economy receive a level of protection that matches their contribution, secures their livelihood, and protects the investments that they make to the local community and economies every day.
Dismantle and REPLACE
I have already seen how this weak on crime approach adversely impacts the lives of residents, small business owners, and independent landlords alike. We shouldn't have to live in fear. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office is a broken institution that has been failing this area for far too long.
We don't need minor tweaks or policy updates. I am calling to dismantle this ineffective agency and REPLACE it with a system where the people who pay the bills—the taxpayers—actually have a say in who protects them.
It is time to defund the failure and fund our own safety.
